Visceral
These mixed-media pieces express my surprisingly strong attraction to a pile of crude metal scraps retrieved from a welding classroom waste bin. In creating this work, I let the metal shapes dictate the pattern and flow. Hand-embossing each form, over and over in some cases, I surrendered intention to the mesmerizing effects of repetition. Instinct overtook thought. I got lost in the quirky edges, scaly textures, and welding slag. The recurring patterns that emerged helped me convey on paper both the simplicity of the shapes and the complexity of the metal.
